Relocation of Second-Hand Clothes Sellers Sparks Controversy in Kasese Municipality
The recent proposal to relocate second-hand clothes sellers in Kasese municipality to Saadi market has sparked controversy among the traders. The sellers were previously relocated to Nyakasanga playground and were given eight months to resettle, but they have failed to do so.
The main reason for rejecting the proposal is that Saadi market is located on the outskirts of Kasese town, making it difficult for customers to reach. "We were not consulted about the relocation, and we cannot afford to move to a new location," says Banyenzaki Xavier, chairperson of Kasese Kikadde Traders. "We urge the authorities to reconsider their decision and find an alternative solution that works for everyone."
On the other hand, LC III Nyamwamba Division Chairperson, Pimako Kasereka, emphasized that the relocation is necessary for better planning of the town and to avoid having redundant or dysfunctional markets due to relying on a single market, Mawa market.
Despite the challenges, the sellers are determined to find a way to continue their businesses. "We will not give up," says Xavier. "We will work together to find a solution that benefits everyone."
The controversy highlights the need for effective communication and collaboration between the authorities and the traders. By working together, they can find a solution that promotes the well-being of both the town and the traders.
As Xavier notes, "We are not just traders, we are also members of this community. We want to contribute to the development of Kasese, but we need the support of the authorities."
