Rwenzururu Kingdom Mourns After Tragic Mzizi-Kyaterekere-Kagadi Incident
Hon. Geofrey Kanyonyi, Minister of Information, Mobilization, and Kingdom Spokesperson for the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR), has released a statement condemning the horrific violence that unfolded in Mzizi-Kyaterekere-Kagadi on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
"The kingdom is profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of life and unequivocally condemns the cult-driven violence that occurred," Minister Kanyonyi stated. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and call on the government to expedite the investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice."
The victims include Isakara Yokonia (76), Kabugho Elinora (64), Munyirambe Boniface (41), Baluku Ferdinand (13), Kabugho Oliver (13), Masika Kabagenyi (3), Kabugho Anita (4), and Muhindo Praise (7). Those injured and hospitalized are Bira Christine (24), Kyakimwa Nipola (45), Nzabara Rogers, Bambi Joy (28), Zakaria, Bira Birungi, and two others whose identities remain unconfirmed.
Minister Kanyonyi commended the prompt response of security forces in managing the situation and emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of religious organizations in the country to prevent future tragedies. "We urge the government to establish clear standards and qualifications for those assuming religious titles to safeguard our communities from harm," he added.
Uganda Police Spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, confirmed the incident and reported that a joint team of Uganda Police and Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) responded to the scene.
Two suspects, Obedi Baguma (33) and David Munyirambe (36), were confronted and killed during the operation.
