Two Children Drown in River Sebwe : Kasese
A heartbreaking incident has left the community of Kasese reeling after two young children lost their lives in a devastating drowning tragedy in River Sebwe, Bughoye sub-county, Kasese District.
The district has witnessed numerous disasters since 2011, claiming over 60 lives, mostly children. This latest incident adds to the growing concern about water safety and the need for urgent action to prevent such tragedies.
On 26th October 2024, two children from Bugoye drowned in River Sebwe and their bodies were retrieved the following morning.
"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Muhindo Lynett, 13, and Masereka Lodricj, 4, who drowned while returning from their garden," said SP Nelson Tumushime, Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson. "The children were from Muramba two village in Bugoye sub-county in Kasese district."
"The bodies were retrieved and handed over to their relatives for burial at their ancestral home," Tumushime added. "We urge parents to keep a close eye on their children and avoid sending them to the river alone. Crossing the river during heavy rain or when the water level is high is dangerous and should be avoided."
The community is in shock and mourning as they come to terms with the loss of two young lives. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for vigilance to prevent such tragedies.
