ADF Abductions: Parents of Kidnapped Students Lose Hope, Seek Government Support - Kasese
Parents of students abducted by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels during the June 16, 2023, attack on Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Secondary School are losing hope of ever seeing their children again.
"We had hope in our children, that's why we took them to school. But now that they have been abducted, we need psychosocial support," said Mr. Safatia Kule, a parent who lost his child, Morris Kule.
The attack resulted in the deaths of over 40 people, including students, and the abduction of several others. Despite efforts to recover the abducted students, none have been found.
"The only option now is for the government to facilitate us to hold memorial services for our children," said Mr. Stephen Bwambale, a parent who lost his child, Festo Muhindo Siryako.
The parents have formed an association to support each other and advocate for government assistance. "We came together as parents to share ideas on how to overcome the challenges we face," said Mr. Sanasio Mupasula, Chairperson of the Parents' Association.
Bishop Moses Okum of the Pentecostal Church in Kasese donated 10 tailoring machines to the parents, aiming to provide economic empowerment. "We want to restore hope among the parents through economic empowerment," said Bishop Okum.
The Kinyamaseke Town Council Chairperson, Mr. Ernest Kyamakya, sympathized with the parents and encouraged them to work together to access government programs. "Let's work as a team and collaborate with leaders so that we can link you to government programs," said Mr. Kyamakya.
