BIIRA THE KASESE TEENAGER SHINES IN FOOTBALL
Kasese, Uganda - Biira Miriam, a 14-year-old girl from Buhunga, is making a name for herself in football.
Miriam plays for Kamaiba Soccer Academy's Kyanya branch. Last year, she played as a striker for Rwenzori High School's senior one team and helped them get to the regional level in Kyegegwa.
Now, Miriam attends Fr. Kanyonza Memorial School. She wants to help her new school team get to the national level this year.
Miriam's talent was discovered by NeFCoRD (New Life Foundation for Community Rural Development) when she was still at Buhunga Primary School. She received a full bursary to attend Fr. Kanyonza Memorial School, thanks to NeFCoRD's project supported by La-Guilde.
Miriam's dream is to become a professional footballer and a medical doctor one day. Her story inspires other young girls in the region to take up football, promoting girls' empowerment and equality in sports.
"Football is not just a game, it's a tool for social change," says Mukwano Titus, NeFCoRD's program manager. "We're proud to support talented young girls like Miriam, who are breaking barriers and paving the way for others to follow."
In Uganda, football is becoming increasingly popular among girls, with initiatives like the Uganda Women's Football League and the FIFA Girls' Football Festival promoting girls' participation in the sport.
Miriam's success is a testament to the growing opportunities for girls in football, and her determination serves as a role model for young girls everywhere..
