JOURNALISTS IN KASESE FACE INCREASING ATTACKS AND INTIMIDATION
Kasese, Uganda - The Umbrella for Journalists in Kasese has raised alarm over the growing number of attacks and intimidation against journalists in the region.
According to Simon Bikeke, Director of the Umbrella for Journalists in Kasese, two disturbing cases of assault and intimidation have been reported. "We have registered two cases of journalists being physically assaulted and intimidated while carrying out their duties in the field," Bikeke revealed during a press conference held at the organization's offices in Kasese Town.
Bikeke emphasized the importance of collaboration between local residents and journalists, stating, "We appeal to the local residents to work harmoniously with journalists. Collaboration is essential for effective information gathering."
He also cautioned journalists to prioritize their safety and well-being, saying, "There's no story worth risking your life. We urge journalists to be mindful of their safety while covering news events."
Bikeke further appealed to newsroom heads to provide necessary support to reporters, particularly those assigned to high-risk areas. "We urge newsroom heads to provide the necessary assistance and support to reporters, especially those covering conflict zones," he said.
The Umbrella for Journalists in Kasese has also sounded a warning to journalists to maintain their neutrality and independence during the political season. "Journalists must adhere to the principles of ethical journalism, avoiding any actions that could compromise their integrity and credibility," Bikeke emphasized.
