Kasese Leaders To Vacate Residents From Kamulikwizi Water Channel - Nyamwamba Floods
Close to over 20 years now, Kasese District is facing a number of disasters that have resulted from loss of lives and properties worthy billions of money. These disasters are prolonged dry spells, mud slides and floods.
River Nyamwamba is one of the biggest rivers in the district known for causing catastrophe and other rivers includes River Nyamughasana, Mubuku, and Lhubiriha whose catchment covers an area of 257 km2, totaling to 7% of the total land in the whole district.
Nyamwamba Water Catchment area has a sub catchment covers 12 local lower governments including Bulembia, Nyamwamba Kilembe, Nyakabingo, Mbunga, Rukoki, Karusandara, Kyalhumba, Bugoye, Muhokya and Mahango.
On Saturday (7th September 2024) River Nyamwamba flooded and claimed two lives. It's believed that more two people who are not yet identified are still missing.
The State Minister for ICT and National Guidance Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga Kiime together with the Kasese District Leadership ask Municipal Council authorities to evacuate people leaving along Kamulikwizi Water Channel as a measure of controlling River Nyamwamba flood effects.
Hon. Kabbyanga explain during his regime as Municipal Mayor he started a move of evaluating residents from Kamulikwizi Water Channel but the idea was shut down due to selfish interests of individuals. He say that as government was ready to work on the water channel.
Mr. Mustafa Kikusa, the Principal Assistant Secretary on behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer who is the Kasese district management disaster committee chairperson, orders all people living along that channel to evacuate immediately.
He warn leaders at all levels including civil servants unite and evacuate this people without politicizing it, adding that any person who will be found stop this move will be taken to courts of law.
"I call upon well wishers with any support or assistance to our affected locals to use the rightful procedures through their offices. I warn the public and politicians from politicizing the floods." Mustafa advise
He thank Mr. Francis Mugisha Kithulha together with the Kithulha care Initiative management for providing 100liters of fuel to be used in delisting of river Nyamwamba as they control floods.
" I ask people to be calm and playful to God for his protection as you look safer places" Kithulha advise.
Some of the affected locals ask these authorities evacuate people equally without looking at positions.
