“NRM Veterans Hid at Our Home” – Kasese NRM Leader Appeals to Museveni Over Family’s Liberation Role

The outgoing LC3 Chairperson of Kitswamba Town Council in Kasese District, Mr. Monday John Wakighoma, has appealed to Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to formally recognize his family’s contribution to Uganda’s liberation struggle, claiming that NRM veterans once hid at their home during the bush war.

Wakighoma made the remarks while congratulating President Museveni on what he described as a seventh term in office, praising government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and ongoing road infrastructure works that he said have benefited communities in Kasese District.

He, however, used the same occasion to revisit his family’s role in the liberation struggle, saying his late father, Mzee Owerangi Paul, supported the National Resistance Army (NRA) through shelter, food, clothing, intelligence, and recruitment assistance.

He further claimed that several of his family members joined the bush war, with some reportedly losing their lives in the process.

Wakighoma alleged that several individuals linked to the liberation struggle, including Gen. Muhesi Geoffrey, Maj. Topher Agaba, Safe Ali, and Paul Kagame, at one time took refuge under his family’s protection.

He added that Gen. Muhesi later attended his father’s burial in 2007 in recognition of the role he played during the struggle.

Despite the family’s historical contribution and support for the ruling NRM party, Wakighoma expressed concern over what he described as continued hardship and lack of official recognition.

He said the family met NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong on October 24, 2023, and submitted a written testimony from Maj. Gen. Topher Agaba documenting their father’s role, but they are yet to receive feedback.

Wakighoma appealed to President Museveni to remember his father’s legacy as the country enters a new political term, saying their contribution remains part of Uganda’s liberation history.

He nevertheless pledged continued support for the President and the NRM government.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony for Members of the 12th Parliament has begun and is expected to run until Friday. The ruling NRM party secured a majority of seats in the recent elections, including in Kasese District where all Members of Parliament are affiliated with the party.
