Sustainable Fishing Gets a Shot in the Arm as UPDF Destroys Illegal Gear
The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces' (UPDF) Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) has dealt a significant blow to illegal fishing operations in Kiruhura district, destroying gear and boats worth over 400 million shillings.
"We will not tolerate illegal fishing activities," declared Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, who led the operation at Nyanga landing site on Lake Kakyeka. "We urge the fishing community to work closely with us to promote sustainable fishing practices."
The seized gear, including seine nets and boats, was destroyed to emphasize the message. "We cannot allow rogue fishermen to undermine our efforts to conserve fish stocks," added Sgt. John Ahumbiza, sector commander at Lake Kakyera.
Local leaders, including Kiruhura Deputy RDC Mr. Mwesigye Moses, praised the FPU's efforts. "We appreciate the President's initiative to curb illegal fishing, which has led to increased fish stocks," said Rwakaishija Andrew, Nyakkasharara Sub-county official.
The fishing community expressed willingness to cooperate with the FPU. "We thank President Museveni for his visionary leadership," said a local fisherman. "We will support conservation efforts to ensure a sustainable future for our industry."
