UN, Bobi & Janet Condemn Tragic Death’ of Olympian Cheptegei

The United Nations joined the rest of world particularly Uganda mourn the loss of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who died at a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, on Thursday.

On Sunday she was reportedly being set on fire by a boyfriend identified as Dickson Ndiema Marangach. The 33-year-old marathon runner, who lived and trained in northwest Kenya, competed in the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

During a disagreement, Cheptegei’s boyfriend doused her in petrol and set her alight, causing burns across 80 percent of her body, according sources from Kenya 

UNAIDS Executive Director Uganda’s Winnie Byanyima urge everyone to “rise and end Gender based violence (GBV)”, stating that “silence is complicity.”

In mourning the loss of “our national star Olympian”, she also condemned “the culture of male domination & tolerance of violence against women, men and children”.

“Today we join the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women in strongly condemning her violent murder,” Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, told media in New York .

Winnie in the Middle 

Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine the National Unity Platform President regretted the death of Uganda's Star via his X handle 

"Very saddened by the untimely passing of this young, talented Ugandan athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei. The circumstances of her death are even more depressing." 

Kyagulanyi call for justice for the death of Rebecca has left people being more depressed. 

"Initial reports indicate she was doused in petrol by her ex-boyfriend and set on fire. We hope there can be quick, efficient investigations of the incident and the perpetrator(s) brought to book." Bobi add

Uganda's First Lady Janet Museveni also regret the the violent act that led to lose of Ugandan Athlete

"My heartfelt condolences go out to the athletics community, her family, friends, and the entire nation on the loss of our Olympian." Janet noted 

"The news of our daughter, Rebecca Cheptegei's tragic death due to domestic violence is deeply disturbing" Janet noted on X
