UPDF Launches 16th CDF Cup Tournament: A Showcase of Excellence, Fitness, and Teamwork
The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) on Tuesday 17 September 2024 officially kicked off its highly anticipated 16th Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup Tournament, a prestigious two-week competition uniting 19 formations and units in a celebration of sportsmanship and military camaraderie.
Hosted by the Mountain Division in Fort Portal City, Kabarole District, the tournament promises to deliver electrifying football and netball matches.
Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Land Force, officially kicks off the tournament, emphasizing the essential role of physical fitness in preparing soldiers for military life. "I see many young people below 25 years failing to join the army because they are physically unfit. I encourage you to do physical exercises to stay healthy," he remarks.
Maj Gen Richard Otto, Commander of the Mountain Infantry Division and Operation Shujaa, acknowledges the pivotal contributions of President and Commander-in-Chief H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, event organizers, and the UPDF for making the event a success. He also extends gratitude to the local community for their ongoing support.
Brig Gen Richard Karemire, Joint Staff Formal Education, Sports, and Culture (JS FESC), outlines the objectives of the CDF Cup: fostering physical and mental wellness, discipline, and teamwork within the UPDF, nurturing sports talent, promoting professionalism, and strengthening civil-military relations.
Hon Linda Irene, Woman Member of Parliament for Fort Portal City, praises the UPDF for selecting the region to host the tournament and calls on the Chief Guest to support improving local sports facilities.
