MADARAKA CUP 2024: PROMOTING PEACE, UNITY, AND TALENT THROUGH SPORTS
The Madaraka Cup 2024 is set to kick off on December 25, 2024, in Kasese, Uganda. The tournament will feature nine teams from across Kasese Municipality, including both football and netball squads from the district's three divisions.
"We are excited to bring communities together through the universal language of sports," said Mr. Yofesi Dagalasi Madaraka, Managing Director of Madaraka Cares and the tournament's brainchild. "Sports have the incredible ability to bring people together from all walks of life. It fosters peace, unity, and teamwork, while also keeping young people away from radical and harmful activities that could derail their future."
The tournament aims to identify and promote young talents, offering them exposure and a stepping stone to professional opportunities in sports. "Our goal is to discover and nurture young talent in both football and netball. But this isn't just about sports – we also want to inspire responsibility," said Mr. Obed Musumba, Manager of Madaraka Cares.
In a unique and environmentally conscious twist, every team participating in the tournament will be required to plant trees as part of the event. "Each team will contribute to environmental conservation by planting trees in their communities. This is our way of tying sports to sustainability and instilling a sense of responsibility among the youth," added Mr. Musumba.
The tournament is open to all teams and individuals who wish to participate, and organizers have emphasized that it is a non-political event. "This is a space for the community to come together in a spirit of peace and collaboration. Politics has no place here – only teamwork, competition, and shared dreams," said Mr. Madaraka.
As the Christmas Day kickoff approaches, excitement is building among locals and the participating teams. "We are thrilled to be part of this tournament and can't wait to showcase our talents," said Julius Baluku, captain of Kidodo Elite, one of the participating teams.
The Madaraka Cup 2024 promises to be an exciting and impactful event that will bring people together through the universal language of sports. "Come and join us in celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship, unity, and responsibility. Whether you're a player, a fan, or a supporter of climate action, there's something for everyone at this year's Madaraka Cup," urged Mr. Baluku.
