FATAL ACCIDENT IN QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK: MOTORCYCLIST COLLIDES WITH HIPPO

Kasese, Uganda - A tragic accident occurred in Queen Elizabeth National Park on January 15, 2025, claiming the life of a 19-year-old motorcycle rider.

According to Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, the rider, identified as Asaba, was traveling from Kikorongo to Katunguru on Hamkungu Road when he struck a hippo at approximately 11:40 PM.

The impact of the collision was fatal, and Asaba succumbed to his injuries. A passenger, Tomothy Tumusime, was seriously injured in the accident.

Tumushime noted that the rider was speeding at the time of the accident, violating Uganda Wildlife Guidelines.

Meanwhile, the hippo involved in the accident is receiving treatment in Lake Nyamunuka.

The police have urged drivers and motorists using the national park to adhere to speed limits and guidelines to prevent such incidents.

The deceased was taken to Kasese Health Centre III for postmortem examination.

The incident is being investigated by the Territorial Police in Katwe Kabatoro Division, Kasese District.
