MBARARA CITY TO HOST HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED MARATHON IN MARCH
The 2025 Mbarara City Marathon is set to take place on March 29th, promising an unforgettable experience for runners and spectators alike. Organized by the Great Ankole Growth of Athletics (GAGA) and Mbarara City Athletics Club, the event will feature 5KM, 10KM, 21KM, and 42KM races, catering to athletes of all levels.
The marathon route winds through the picturesque "Land of Honey and Milk", showcasing the region's stunning natural scenery. The event also celebrates the iconic Long Horned Cattle of Ankole Region, a beloved symbol of the area's rich cultural heritage.
According to Kaka Dickens Friday, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, the event aims to position Mbarara City as the hub of tourism ventures in Western Uganda and East Africa. "Our goal is to create a big feel that Mbarara City is the center of tourism in the region," he stated.
The organizers have announced that awards will be confirmed by January 15th. Runners from within Uganda and abroad are invited to participate, with a team from Kasese already confirming their participation - their third marathon to date.
Kaka Dickens Friday emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the region's unique cultural heritage. "It is our collective responsibility to prepare and showcase Mbarara City as a premier tourist destination,"
He said. "As home to the iconic Ankole Cow and Lake Mburo National Park, East Africa's largest zebra sanctuary, we have a duty to preserve and promote this incredible legacy."
By hosting events like the Mbarara City Marathon, the city aims to share its unique cultural heritage with the world, highlighting the importance of conservation and preservation.
