"Democracy Gives a Voice to the Voiceless": Uganda Democracy Academy Graduates 3rd Cohort
The Uganda Democracy Academy on Friday ( 20th August 2025 ) held its third graduation ceremony at Makerere University in Kampala, marking a significant milestone for the academy and its graduates. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of young leaders who have been empowered to promote democratic values, leadership, and civic engagement.
Among the distinguished graduates was Sam Baluku, the aspirant for MP Kasese Municipality at National Unity Platform ticket, who served as the President of the cohort. Baluku expressed his pride and gratitude, highlighting the importance of the knowledge and skills gained during his time at the academy.
"The knowledge and skills I've gained will empower me to contribute to our nation's growth and democracy," Baluku said.
The Uganda Democracy Academy aims to promote democratic principles and empower young Ugandans to shape the country's future. Guillaume Chartrain, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Uganda, praised the graduates for engaging in cross-party debates with integrity, describing democracy as a continuous process of transmission, dialogue, and service.
Mr. Atukwatse Primus Bahiigi, Executive Director of NIMD-Uganda, emphasized the power of democracy, saying, "Democracy is not perfect but it's powerful... It gives a voice to the voiceless, power to the people, and legitimacy to leadership." He encouraged the youth to be nationalistic with a global mind, loving their country while learning from others.
The graduates are expected to play a key role in promoting democratic values and shaping Uganda's future.
