Kasese District Disaster Management Committee released rapid assessment report about the recent floods caused by River Nyamwamba Floods.
On 6th Sept 2024, River Nyamwamba burst it's banks leaving two people dead and others displaced in Kasese Municipality. Floods occured due to heavy rains in Rwenzori Mountains.
Mr. Wilson Lhughabwe the Secretary Kasese Municipal Council KMC Disaster Committee represented the report during a joint District and Municipal Disaster Management Committee Meeting that held at Mayor's garden in Kasese town
He indicate that 1,469 houses flooded in the cells of Mumbuzi, Kitoro, Kisaga A and B, Saluti A and B, Kamulikwizi, Kikozo, Bascamp lawer, Nyakasanga, Kizungu and Katonzi.
According to a report seen by reporter 9,989 people were affected, where by 220 households are being hosted in some families, and 1,132 people are currently displaced.
The report also indicate that Nyamwamba Primary School, and Kasese Muslim Secondary have been proposed as IDP camps
Mr. Zedekia Kambasu Kayiri the Kasese Municipal Senior Town Clerk call for more disaster management meetings because they help in planning.
He say that also the public should be sensitized on how to leave and protect themselves from such disaster.
Mr. Charles Komakechi an Officer from Department of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Management in the office of the Prime Minister, say that government is looking for a long term solution on how to fight floods in Kasese District at large.
He add that the solution need collective efforts by both leaders and locals
