BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY ALERT: UGANDA GRAPPLES WITH ALARMING RATE OF ROAD ACCIDENTS INVOLVING SCHOOL CHILDREN

KAMPALA, UGANDA - As students return to school for the third term, Uganda is facing a pressing concern: the alarming rate of road accidents involving school-going children. In 2023, a staggering 872 children between the ages of 5 and 18 lost their lives in road crashes, while this year alone has already seen 239 fatalities.

Rusoke Kituuma, Police Spokesperson

Rusoke Kituuma, Police Spokesperson, emphasizes that the return of children to school poses safety risks, including public transport and financial transactions. "Safety is a collective responsibility," Kituuma stresses, urging stakeholders to prioritize safety and security measures.

The Police Force is appealing to banks to promote alternative payment methods, such as digital wallets and online banking, to reduce cash transactions and associated risks. Parents are also cautioned against common acts of negligence, including sending children to school without adult supervision and dropping them off at a distance from the school entrance.

School administrators are urged to verify students' health upon arrival, inspect pupils' belongings for illegal substances, gadgets, or weapons, and establish clear enrollment and announcement procedures.

By working together, we can create a secure environment for our children. Remember, safety is everyone's responsibility.
