Kasese District Council Rebels Against Boss's Bid to Suspend Corrupt Officials
In a stunning turn of events, the Kasese District Council has defied the district boss's proposal to suspend three members of the district service commission accused of corruption, sparking a heated debate on accountability and transparency.
District Boss, Mr. Muhindi Eriphaz, had asked three members - Mr. Turuganya Lawrence, Ms. Rebecca Kabyanga, and Mr. Joshua Miramagho - to step aside pending investigations into alleged job sales in the district. However, councilors overturned the proposal, arguing that it was beyond the district boss's mandate.
"I am shocked to see councilors jumping to protect corrupt members of the service commission," a visibly frustrated Mr. Eriphaz told the media. "It's even more disturbing to learn that some councilors were bribed to overturn my proposal."
Hon. Mugisha Guard, district councilor representing Kitswamba sub-county, raised a motion to overturn the proposal, citing that the Public Service Commission committee can only be fired after investigations by the Probe Committee appointed by the district Council.
Hon. Kaliba Charles, district councilor representing Karambi Sub County, added, "It's too early to ask the public service commission to step aside before investigation reports. Even the office of the CAO, Human Resources, and district Executive should be investigated."
The council has now appointed a probe committee, chaired by Hon. Moris Kabunzungwire, to investigate the allegations, with a one-month deadline to complete the task.
The move has raised questions about the council's commitment to fighting corruption and the influence of money in local politics. As one councilor noted, "The public is watching, and we must ensure that justice is served."
