KILEMBE MINES GETS 3 BILLION SHILLING LIFELINE: A Glimmer of Hope for Uganda's Industrial Revival
Kasese, Uganda - In a bid to revive its ailing infrastructure, the government has injected 3 billion shillings into Kilembe Mines Limited, sparking hopes of a comeback for the once-thriving copper and cobalt mine.
Kilembe Mines, which employed thousands and fueled Uganda's growth in its heyday, has been in decline since the 1970s and 1980s due to neglect, political instability, and economic mismanagement. Despite numerous attempts to revive it, the mine has remained in a state of limbo.
Eng. Edson Kambere, Caretaker CEO and Chief Mechanical Engineer, welcomed the funding, saying, "This is a crucial step towards restoring Kilembe Mines to its former glory. We're working tirelessly to ensure that when an investor comes, they'll find a functional company."
The funds will be used to revamp roads, offices, and transmission lines, as well as procure pumps for underground water. However, some are skeptical about the impact of this investment, with Eng. Kambere admitting, "We're doing just enough to keep the lights on. With minimal businesses like power generation and mechanical workshops, we're barely scraping by."
The 3 billion shilling injection has raised questions about whether it will be enough to resuscitate the mine or if it's just a temporary fix. As the local community and the country await a solution to restore Kilembe Mines to its former glory, one thing is clear - this investment is a glimmer of hope for Uganda's industrial revival.
