Low Pay, High Passion: The Reality of Journalism in Kasese
Journalists in Kasese, Uganda, are facing a harsh reality: low pay and limited job opportunities. Despite their passion and dedication to the profession, many journalists in the region are struggling to make ends meet. "As journalists, we are expected to deliver high-quality work, but our pay is not commensurate with our skills and experience," says Enid Kitara Tumusiime, a journalist working with a media house in Kasese.
Kachope Sam, a graduate and journalist working with Vision Group, agrees. "We need to be motivated to continue delivering quality work, and that includes a salary increment. It's not just about the money, but about the value we bring to our employers and the community."
The issue of low pay was highlighted during the recent graduation ceremony at Liberty College of Management and Journalism, where over 300 students received certificates and diplomas in journalism and business studies. Brian Mumbere, the college registrar, urged students to continue upgrading their skills and knowledge to remain relevant in the industry.
Thembo Wilfred, a graduate in journalism, noted that finding employment in Kasese is challenging due to the limited number of media houses. "It's tough to get a job in this field, but we're determined to make a difference," he said. Ngangasi Daniel, the school director, emphasized that the college is committed to providing quality education at an affordable cost. "We didn't start this college for profit, but to help the people of Kasese acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed."
As the journalism industry continues to evolve, it's essential to address the issue of low pay and limited job opportunities. By doing so, we can ensure that journalists in Kasese and beyond are able to pursue their passion without sacrificing their well-being. Kachope Sam and his fellow journalists are a testament to the power of passion and determination in the face of adversity.
