REBECCA CHEPTEGEI: Silenced by Violence-Olympic Star Buried

A gruesome act of gender-based violence has left Uganda reeling, as Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei fell victim to a brutal attack that ended her life in a blaze of flames.

"'Gender-based violence and backward cultural prejudices that discriminate women against property ownership should have no place in this generation and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible.'" - Peter, representative of H.E the President

Cheptegei, a shining star in Uganda's athletic firmament, was tragically laid to rest in Bukwo District yesterday 14th September 2024, leaving behind a legacy of triumph on the national and international stages. Her brutal murder, allegedly at the hands of her former boyfriend, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.

"'Our female athletes face numerous challenges, including domestic violence and interference from spouses during training and competitions. Some husbands have even taken over coaching roles, preventing professional coaches from training their wives,'" lamented Ugandan Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang.

As hundreds mourned Cheptegei's tragic death, the Ugandan government handed over Shs50m in condolence to the family, with Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Sports and government standing in solidarity. A road will be named in her honor, and her memory will live on through her gold medal victory at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.

Cheptegei's senseless death serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address gender-based violence and promote gender equality in Uganda.

Ends.
