COUNCILORS SEEK ANSWERS TO DEADLY ACCIDENTS ON KASESE HIGHWAY
Kasese - A group of councilors from the Central Division in Kasese Municipality has sounded the alarm over the high number of accidents on the Kasese-Kikorongo Highway, particularly between Kasese Cobalt Company Limited and Kyababinga junctions.
During Wednesday's ( 30th October 2024) council sitting at the Division Council Hall, the councilors appealed to the government and religious to investigate the causes of the accidents that have claimed many lives.
Ms. Shamila Masika, Councilor representing Town Centre Ward, expressed frustration with the Traffic Police Officers for their alleged failure to control taxi drivers' overspeeding and overloading.
Mr. Jockus Bijwanga, Councilor representing Nyakabingo II Ward, questioned why over 20 people have lost their lives within the same stretch of road from Kasese town to Kyababinga junction.
Central Division Chairperson, Mr. Martin Safari, shared the councilors' concerns and revealed plans to seek spiritual intervention. He believes that prayer warriors can help rid the area of accidents, citing unverified reports of a "devil" in the form of a woman crossing the area into the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The councilors' call to action seeks to address the persistent problem and ensure the safety of road users on this notorious stretch of highway.
Recently the Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime, told press that they are arrested driver on allegations of overloading. He called upon road users to ensure safety
