"Healthcare in Crisis: 90% of Health Workers Absent from Duty, Patients' Lives at Risk" - Hon Florence Kasese Woman MP
A shocking survey by Kasese District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Florence Kabugho, has revealed that a staggering 90% of health workers are absent from government health facilities, especially on weekends.
This egregious dereliction of duty is putting patients' lives at risk, as they are not receiving the medical attention they desperately need.
"The situation is appalling," Hon. Kabugho said. "Patients are being left to die because health workers are not showing up for work. This is unacceptable and we need to take immediate action to address this crisis."
At Kyempara HCIII in Isango sub-county, Bukonzo county West, only one staff member was present, despite 14 clients waiting for treatment.
Musyenene HCIII in Nyakiyumbu sub-county had only two staff members, including a security guard, on duty. Kaghorwe HCIII in Kyondo sub-county, Bukonzo county East, had only one midwife on duty.
"This is a ticking time bomb," Hon. Kabugho warned. "If we don't address this issue, we will see a rise in morbidity and mortality rates and a complete collapse of our healthcare system."
The few health workers who were present expressed frustration and helplessness. "We are overworked and understaffed," said Ms. Jenifer Biira, a health worker at Musyenene HCIII. "We don't know why our colleagues are absent, but it's putting a lot of pressure on us. We are struggling to provide adequate patient care, including essential medications and treatments."
Hon. Kabugho has vowed to take action, saying, "We need to hold health workers accountable for their absence and ensure that patients receive the care they deserve. This is a matter of life and death, and we can't afford to wait any longer.
" We need to address the root causes of this crisis, including staffing shortages, inadequate training, and poor working conditions. We also need to ensure that health workers are properly equipped to handle emergency situations and provide quality care to patients."
The situation is a stark reminder of the dire state of healthcare in the region and the need for urgent reform to address the systemic issues that are putting patients' lives at risk.
Ends.
