STUDENTS POINT FINGERS AT PARENTS OVER TEENAGE PREGNANCIES-KASESE
Pupils from four schools in Munkunyu sub-county are sparking a heated debate. They're blaming parents for the rising cases of early teenage pregnancies in their community.
During a debate organized by Justice Livelihoods Health, a non-governmental organization, the students from Kacungiro Primary School, Munkunyu Primary School, Kitsutsu Primary School, and Kilambairo Primary School, are attributing the problem to parental irresponsibility.
"Many young girls born to parents struggling with alcoholism, divorce, poverty, and incest, among other issues, are more likely to experience early teenage pregnancies," says one pupil.
However, the students are also acknowledging that some girls' undisciplined behavior, association with bad groups, and love for money can contribute to the problem.
According to Gender Trainer Jackline Akong from Justice Livelihoods Health, "Parents need to communicate openly with their daughters about sex and relationships to prevent them from being caught off guard by bodily changes and peer pressure."
Pastor Alfonse Bwambale is advising girls to avoid isolated areas where they may be pressured into making sexual decisions, while Kasese Youth Link Executive Director Kato Ronald is emphasizing the need for parents to report perpetrators to authorities instead of accepting bribes.
The debate highlighted the urgent need for community action to address the escalating cases of early teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and defilement, which are hindering development and leading to school dropouts in Uganda.
