16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Launches in Kasese

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign kicked off yesterday in Kasese, with a stakeholders' engagement at Boma Ground in Kasese Town. The event was organized by the Kasese District Local Government and partners, under the theme "United Against Child Marriages".

Speakers at the event reaffirmed their commitment to ending child marriages and fighting gender-based violence (GBV) in Kasese. Carolyn Proscovia Idembe Bunga, Vice Chairperson of the Board of Management of Justice Livelihoods Health, emphasized the need for collective efforts to address the issue.

Asimwe Queen Gonda, Senior District Community Development Officer (Gender Focal Person), highlighted the prevalence of physical violence against women and girls, and urged teachers to educate children about violence control.

Principal Secretary in the office of CAO, Kikusa Musitafa, stressed the importance of including men and boys in the conversation, as they also suffer from GBV. He encouraged organizations to conduct research on the issue and called on children to respect their parents.

Henry Kabiriri, Assistant RDC in Charge of Busongora County (Kasese), emphasized the government's commitment to empowering communities and addressing poverty, a leading cause of violence. He expressed the government's intention to improve the Parish Development Model (PDM).

Hon. Best Juliet Bakoko, OBR of Gender, Rehabilitation and Disability Affairs, represented Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu and condemned bad cultural practices that promote child marriages and violence. She announced the production of a book on good cultural practices, soon to be published.

Kato Ronald, Director of Kasese Youth Link for Development, urged family heads to include children in planning processes.

The event marked the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism campaign in Kasese, with stakeholders committed to working together to end GBV and promote a safer and more equitable society.
