MATOKE SHORTAGE HITS KASESE, PRICES SKYROCKET
Kasese, Uganda - A severe shortage of matooke has hit Kasese, leaving many residents in a state of panic. The price of matooke has surged from 5,000 to 20,000 Uganda shillings, with no signs of decreasing anytime soon.
"The heavy winds in August devastated our plantations in the Tooro and Nkole regions, leading to a severe shortage of matooke in Kasese," said Kimezi Richard, Chairman of Mawa Market in Kasese Municipality
Edith Kalema, a local trader, attributed the price hike to the scarcity of matooke in the market. "The price has increased because there is no matooke in the market. We are now relying on matooke from Maliba and Kilembe, but it's not enough," Kalema saitod
Kyomuhangyi Fred, a matooke dealer at Mawa Market, warned that the situation might worsen during the Christmas season. "If the situation doesn't change, people in Kasese might have to eat rice for Christmas. We are struggling to get matooke from the villages, and even when we do, we have to sell it at a high price," Fred said.
Kanyongole, another matooke dealer, echoed Fred's sentiments. "We are doing our best to bring matooke to the market, but it's not easy. We have to travel long distances to get it, and sometimes we even fail to get it," Kanyongole said.
The shortage of matooke has left many residents of Kasese worried, as matooke is a staple food in the region.
