Rwenzori Region Sees Surge in Road Accidents, Authorities Sound Alarm

Kasese, Uganda - A recent surge in road accidents in the in Rwenzori East region particularly Kasese has prompted authorities to urge drivers to exercise caution on the roads.

According to SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, four accidents have been registered since Monday, resulting in serious road crashes.

"We are alarmed by the increasing number of road accidents in our region," said SP Tumushime. "We urge all drivers to be vigilant and cautious on the roads to prevent such accidents."

SP Tumushime further emphasized the importance of road safety, saying "Always wear your seatbelt and ensure your passengers do the same. Avoid speeding and drive at safe speeds. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs."

Matise Jockus, the chairperson of the tax driver's association at Bwera Stage in Kasese Town, attributed the accidents to reckless driving and poor road conditions.

"The state of the Bwera-Kasese road is not good, and drivers need to be careful," said Jockus.

Musinguzi Ray Robert, the transport delegate to the Kasese Municipal Development Forum, advised drivers to get enough rest and avoid making return journeys without resting.

"Drivers should always have time to rest and avoid making returns without resting," said Robert. "Use your headlights and taillights, especially during low visibility. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid using your mobile phone while driving."

Baluku Amos Bosco, the chairperson of the Kasese-Fort Portal taxi stage, warned road users to be careful during the festive season, as the roads become busier.

"Road users should be careful during this festive season because the roads are becoming more busy," said Bosco. "Be cautious of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Let's work together to prevent road accidents and keep our roads safe."

The authorities have pledged to step up enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further accidents.
