MPS CONDEMN HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES, CALL FOR RESPECT FOR RULE OF LAW IN UGANDA
Kampala, Uganda - Members of Parliament in Uganda have condemned the increasing human rights abuses in the country, particularly the targeting of opposition leaders, following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Kawempe North Member of Parliament and National Unity Platform stalwart.
Ssegirinya, popularly known as "Mr. Update," passed away yesterday morning after battling illness for nearly two years. His death has sent shockwaves across the country, with many calling for accountability and an end to human rights abuses.
Mathias Mpunga, MP for Mukungwe Division and Former Leader of Opposition, said, "The hunting of opposition leaders must cease. The death of Ssegirinya has exposed the kind of politics we have in Uganda, and it's unacceptable."
Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of the Opposition, added, "We must respect the rule of law. The threats from the Chief of Defense Forces are not good for our democracy."
Achieng Sarah Opendi, Minister of State for Mineral Development, emphasized the need to uphold the law, saying, "We must follow the law and avoid torturing people when they're arrested. Security personnel and parliamentarians must lead by example."
Basalirwa Asuman, MP for Bugiri Municipality, called on the court to withdraw all cases against individuals who were co-accused with Ssegirinya.
Kateshumbwa Dickson, MP for Sheema Municipality (NRM), praised the late Ssegirinya, saying, "I thank Ssegirinya for the good things he did. Let's continue to support each other as members of Parliament."
The MPs' comments come amid growing concerns about human rights abuses in Uganda.
