Gulu Marathon Donates 10 Million Shillings to Support Education and Set For International Certification
The Gulu Marathon city team, led by Francis Gimara, has donated 10 million shillings to support education in the region. The amount represents 10% of the proceeds from last year's marathon, which was earmarked for education support.
The donation was made in the presence of Gulu City Lord Mayor Alfred Okwengo who pledged the government's and city council's full support for the marathon. Okwengo highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to promote education and sports development in the region.
In a related development, the Gulu City Marathon team recently sponsored the Acholi regional schools athletic championship, providing full sponsorship to eight top runners - four boys and four girls - to participate in the second edition of the marathon.
The Gulu City Marathon has taken significant steps towards becoming an international event. The marathon course has been measured, and World Athletics officials visited to mark the 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km routes. Once certified, Gulu City Marathon will become Uganda's second international marathon, following the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon.
This development is expected to boost the tourism sector and promote sports development in the region. The Gulu City Marathon team remains committed to making a positive impact in the community, promoting education, sports development, and youth empowerment.
