Martyrs Day Celebrations Boost to Religious Tourism in Uganda
Thousands of pilgrims from Uganda, the East African Community, Africa, and beyond converged on the Namugongo Anglican Shrine for the Martyrs Day celebrations.
Many walked from different districts and countries to witness the historic event. President Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni attended the event, which has been hailed as a significant boost to Uganda's religious tourism sector.
Hon. Mugarra Bahinduka Martin, State Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, thanked the President for allocating annual funds for the event in the national budget, expected to improve infrastructure and facilities at the shrines.
"The Uganda Martyrs' blood speaks louder than strong speeches, reminding us that unity in Christ is powerful. Let's reject tribalism, for we are all children of God," said the Lord Bishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Paul Ssemogerere.
President Museveni urged believers to "pursue prosperity while keeping politics and religion separate," welcoming pilgrims from across the country.
The government donated 2 billion shillings each to the Catholic and Anglican shrines and 200 million shillings to the Muslim shrine to support the commemoration.
