The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon: A Testimony of Hope and Opportunity for Kasese's Growth, Development, and Investment

"I applaud the visionaries behind the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, which has grown into a truly global event attracting thousands of runners from across the world," said Janet Museveni. "You have lifted Kasese, and with it, Uganda's image on the international stage. We are a blessed country, yet too often we fail to push hard because life here is relatively easy. But we are part of a global community, and we must learn to hustle like others."

She encouraged the organizers to keep them informed of their challenges so that they can support them, as the President stands ready to intervene where political engagement is needed, including on the issue of restrictive travel advisories.

Amos Wekesa, the team leader at Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, noted that the event has sparked interest in Kasese as an investment hub. Recently, a Tanzanian investor bought 4 acres to build a hotel, and two Kenyans inquired about investment opportunities and land ownership conditions. The event highlights Kasese and the Rwenzori region throughout the year, attracting more visitors and investors.

Wekesa added that Kasese is set to attract massive investments in the next 10 years, and the brand Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is growing, with increasing demands that require thoughtful sustainability planning.

The marathon's impact on tourism is evident. Rwenzori ranges saw a significant increase in climbers, from 1,000 in 2022 to 10,000 last year, with expectations to reach over 30,000 in the next four years. Increased visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale, and Semuliki game reserves are also expected.

Local hotel owners report improved numbers throughout the year, but acknowledge there's still room for growth. Wekesa emphasizes the importance of the bigger picture, noting that businesses or towns can't grow in isolation of national dreams.

The quality of spenders and runners coming to Kasese and Fort Portal during the marathon has continued to grow, with demands for better quality accommodations, eateries, and transportation increasing. As investment follows opportunities, stakeholders are advised to be on the lookout.

Kasese community leaders and residents have also shared their perspectives on the marathon's impact. Jovia Mbambu, the Kasese Tourism Officer, highlighted that the marathon has truly changed the lives of many people in the area and increased the number of visitors coming to Rwenzori. Kule Baritazale Benson, the Prime Minister of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu, emphasized the Kingdom's commitment to promoting cultural tourism, including establishing a cultural museum and developing different cultural sites.

Some residents, like Rogers Mutahunga Baluku, have suggested that improving infrastructure development, such as upgrading Kasese Airfield to an international airport, would ease the movement of visitors. Meanwhile, young runners like Kule Eric are passionate about participating in the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon and tapping into the opportunities it brings, while also promoting their culture.
