Organic Fertilizers: A Solution to Climatic Challenges in Kasese

Smallholder farmers in Kasese Municipality have been encouraged to adopt organic fertilizer production as a strategy to mitigate climate-related challenges. During a two-day training session held in Kibenge Cell, Kasese Municipality, Evelyn Mugume, the Kasese Municipal Environmental Officer, emphasized the detrimental effects of chemical fertilizers on the environment, soil, and human health.

"The increased use of chemicals on farms has escalated climate-related challenges, polluting the soil and affecting its productivity," Evelyn noted. "These chemicals have also impacted the food chain, putting human life at risk, and harming beneficial insects like bees, which are crucial for pollination."

Prof. Frank Mugagga, Project Leader for Resilient Urban Food Systems (RUFS) at Makerere University, echoed Evelyn's sentiments, stating that the persistent use of agrochemicals has negatively impacted soil health and farm productivity. He urged smallholder farmers to adopt organic fertilizers to adapt to the changing climatic conditions in Kasese.

"The project aims to promote sustainable farming practices, not to jeopardize the agrochemical industry," Prof. Mugagga clarified. "However, we need to recognize the damage caused by these chemicals and work towards more sustainable solutions."

Prof. Mugagga also highlighted the need for urban authorities to recognize and support urban farmers in ensuring food sustainability.

Henry Stanley Mbowa from Aid Environment, a Kampala-based NGO, noted that the training would equip farmers with knowledge on making organic pesticides from locally available materials. "We have introduced seven types of environmentally friendly pesticides that have been tested and proven effective," he said.

Eunice Sunday Mutoro, the RUFS focal person in Kasese, expressed her enthusiasm for the training, stating that organic fertilizers would increase crop production and improve household incomes. She pledged to use the training to empower other farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
