Centenary Bank Partners with Good Forests Foundation and Kasese District Local Government to Plant 5,000 Trees in Kasese District
Kasese, 26th November 2025: Centenary Bank, in partnership with the Good Forests Foundation and Kasese District Local Government, has launched a tree-planting initiative targeting 5,000 fruit and timber trees in Kasese District.
This effort underscores Centenary Bank's commitment to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and community welfare. The collaboration seeks to boost local environmental resilience, improve air quality, and foster stronger ties between the private sector and local communities.
At the launch, Emmanuel Otuko, Centenary Bank's Sustainability Manager, emphasized the bank's dedication to climate action. "Our mission at Centenary Bank is rooted in empowering communities," he said. "This extends beyond financial services to preserving the environment for future generations. We believe sustainable development and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand, which is why sustainability is core to our strategy."
This initiative aligns with the bank's goal to plant 70,000 trees across Uganda in 2025; it has already planted 60,000 trees nationwide. Earlier this year, the bank committed UGX 60 million to restoring 20 hectares of the Masindi Central Forest Reserve, partnering with the National Forestry Authority.l
Uganda's forest cover grew from 9.5% in 2015 to 13.3% in 2024, but more efforts are needed to reach the 15% target by 2026, according to the country's Third Voluntary National Review Report. Continued deforestation could undermine progress, impacting Uganda's people and environment.
James Thembo, Director of Good Forests Foundation, highlighted their focus on ensuring the trees thrive. "We've selected species that will restore biodiversity and benefit the local ecosystem long-term," he said. "We're proud to partner with Centenary Bank on this critical initiative."
Centenary Bank has planted over 60,000 trees nationwide and is expanding its sustainability efforts, including transitioning six branches to solar energy and offering green loans and WASH loans for community projects.
Paul Walakira, Kasese District Local Government's Forestry Officer, praised the partnership, saying, "Environmental sustainability needs collective action. This project supports Uganda's Vision 2040 goal of a green economy and clean environment."
