Rwenzori Leaders Assure Visitors of Safety Ahead of Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon Amid Ebola Concerns
Leaders from the Rwenzori Region have reassured the public and visitors that Kasese District remains safe ahead of the upcoming Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, following concerns and misinformation linked to Ebola.
The leaders, who included Members of Parliament from the region, held a joint press conference today ( June 19th 2026) to address fears surrounding Ebola and its possible impact on tourism activities in the area.
The press conference was led by Hon. Benjamin Kabyanga Cardet, Member of Parliament for Bunyaruguru County, Hon. Sarah Ithungu Masereka, Kasese District Woman MP, and Hon. Mulindwa David Isimbwa, Busongora South MP.
They emphasized that Kasese District and the wider Rwenzori Region are Ebola-free and remain open for both local and international visitors.
The leaders clarified that the recently reported Ebola cases were imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), adding that there are no active Ebola cases in Kasese. They also noted that cross-border movements are being closely monitored to protect public health.
Hon. Kabyanga expressed concern over the negative impact of Ebola-related misinformation on the tourism sector, saying hotels, tour operators, and other businesses have suffered losses due to cancellations caused by fear and inaccurate reports.
Hon. Mulindwa assured the public and international community that security in the region remains intact, with relevant authorities working together to guarantee a safe and successful marathon.
Hon. Sarah Masereka called on the Government to continue supporting tourism events and work with organizers and health officials to implement necessary safety measures.
The leaders also pledged their support to marathon organizer Amos Wekesa, highlighting the growing global recognition of the Rwenzori Marathon, with participants from over 25 countries already registered.
The Rwenzori Marathon remains a key event in promoting Uganda’s tourism, boosting local economies, and showcasing the beauty and resilience of the Rwenzori Region.
