BIIRA THE KASESE TEENAGER SHINES IN FOOTBALL

Kasese, Uganda - Biira Miriam, a 14-year-old girl from Buhunga, is making a name for herself in football. Miriam plays for Kamaiba Soccer Academy's Kyanya branch. Last year, she played as a striker for Rwenzori High School's senior one team and helped them get to the regional level in Kyegegwa. Biira Miriam   Now, Miriam attends Fr. Kanyonza Memorial School. She wants to help her new school team get to the national level this year. Miriam's talent was discovered by NeFCoRD (New Life Foundation for Community Rural Development) when she was still at Buhunga Primary School. She received a full bursary to attend Fr. Kanyonza Memorial School, thanks to NeFCoRD's project supported by La-Guilde. Miriam's dream is to become a professional footballer and a medical doctor one day. HIPPOPOTAMUS MEAT SEIZURE LEADS TO ARREST OF TWO POACHERS IN KASESE

  Kasese, Uganda - Two suspects, Mumbere Patrick, 24, and Mumbere Robert, 21, were arrested in Kahendero cell, Muhokya Sub-county, Kasese District, for possessing protected wildlife species, including hippopotamus meat. "We have arrested two individuals found with hippopotamus meat and other wildlife products in their possession," said Nelson Tumushime, Police Spokesperson for Rwenzori East. Tumushime cautioned residents that entering national parks without permission and possessing protected wildlife species are illegal under the Uganda Wildlife Act. "We urge everyone to respect the law and protect our wildlife. Those found breaking the law will be dealt with accordingly," he warned. LINK BUS INVOLVED IN FATAL CRASH IN KASESE: DRIVER CAUTIONED TO FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES

  Kasese, Uganda - A Link Bus with registration number UBR 626Z was involved in a fatal accident in Hima Division, Kasese District, on January 29, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m. "We received a report of a fatal accident involving a Link Bus and a tricycle. Unfortunately, one passenger lost their life," said Nelson Tumushime, Police Spokesperson for Rwenzori East. According to eyewitnesses, the tricycle was overloaded with maize and had no headlights, making it difficult for the bus driver to see it. "The bus struck the tricycle from behind, resulting in one fatality. We urge drivers to exercise caution and follow traffic rules to prevent such incidents," Tumushime added. The injured victims were taken to hospitals in Hima and Kasese for medical attention. As schools reopen, Tumushime cautioned drivers to be vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations. A joint operation by Bwera Police and other security agencies, codenamed "Gaza Phase II" and "B13", has resulted in the arrest and remand of 49 suspects in the Mpondwe Border Area. FATAL ACCIDENT IN QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK: MOTORCYCLIST COLLIDES WITH HIPPO

Kasese, Uganda - A tragic accident occurred in Queen Elizabeth National Park on January 15, 2025, claiming the life of a 19-year-old motorcycle rider. According to Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, the rider, identified as Asaba, was traveling from Kikorongo to Katunguru on Hamkungu Road when he struck a hippo at approximately 11:40 PM. The impact of the collision was fatal, and Asaba succumbed to his injuries. A passenger, Tomothy Tumusime, was seriously injured in the accident. Tumushime noted that the rider was speeding at the time of the accident, violating Uganda Wildlife Guidelines. Meanwhile, the hippo involved in the accident is receiving treatment in Lake Nyamunuka. Grace, formerly a maid in Kireka, Kampala, was let go by her employer. She then traveled to Kasese, where she was briefly held by police after seeking help at Messiah Radio reception. Released from custody, Grace was seen along Mukirania Street in Kasese Town around 12pm, asking for job opportunities. Efforts are also underway to locate Grace's relatives, as her family background and contacts remain unknown. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in tracing her family. Speaking in a mix of Luganda and simple English, Grace expressed her desire to find work and get her life back on track. Many are asking why the winner of the car wasn't awarded it publicly, despite it being a public event. We witnessed the launch of the Miss Rwenzori competition and even saw the car that was supposed to be awarded to the winner. ADF Abductions: Parents of Kidnapped Students Lose Hope, Seek Government Support - Kasese

Parents of students abducted by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels during the June 16, 2023, attack on Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Secondary School are losing hope of ever seeing their children again. "We had hope in our children, that's why we took them to school. But now that they have been abducted, we need psychosocial support," said Mr. Safatia Kule, a parent who lost his child, Morris Kule. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 40 people, including students, and the abduction of several others. Despite efforts to recover the abducted students, none have been found. "The only option now is for the government to facilitate us to hold memorial services for our children," said Mr. Stephen Bwambale, a parent who lost his child, Festo Muhindo Siryako.
